Approximately 60% of Peru's total population is indigenous. These native communities speak more than 60 languages other than Spanish as their first language. Quechua, the language of the Inca empire and now the official second language of the nation, is taught in many primary schools and even in universities. In recent years, Peru has inaugurated a government program to promote bilingual education--Spanish plus the native language--for indigenous children. Unfortunately, these programs have not yet reached Huacaria. Bilingual education is especially important to save the Wachipaeri language, which could soon be lost since so few adult speakers remain.
