In 2003, the community started testing their water supply to monitor levels of contamination. Samples were gathered from springs, streams, rivers, water system tanks, and water tap stations. In this photo, the coordinator of this study, Glenn Shepard Jr., a medical anthropologist, is organizing the samples before they are transported to the city of Cuzco for analysis. Laboratory scientists studied the samples under microscopes and found that all of the surrounding rivers and streams in the community, as well as all segments of the tap water system, contain moderate to high levels of a bacteria known as coliform, indicating that the water is contaminated and thus unhealthy to drink.
